Speakers used to be designed for high efficiency, back when powerful amplifiers were expensive. Nowadays you can put as many speakers in a light plastic box as you like because of the sound correction programs in processors and cheap amps. The fun is that if you combine the old horned sound system with modern digital amps you get a load of quality sound with a fraction of energy a new system would use. Led lamps, diode lasers and the art of "more with less" cuts down power consumption with producing more effect. This combined with a power-grid that shuts down non used applications really does the trick. We don't need no big smoking generator!
